Area of Expertise: Prototyping, Testing & Iteration Karen Xie, Ph.D., is Senior VP and Chief Technology Officer at Blue Shield of California, directing the $20 billion healthcare payer’s overall technology vision and execution to enable Blue Shield to grow its business and transform the healthcare ecosystem, bringing it into the digital age. Dr. Xie has over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Blue Shield in 2014, she spent over 16 years at Trinity Health, a Michigan-based national health system. There, she served as vice president of enterprise architecture and innovation. Dr Xie built Trinity Health’s first Innovation Lab and achieved Trinity Health’s cognition as top 5 healthcare providers by InformationWeek’s Innovation 500 Award. Earlier in her career, Dr. Xie was a research scientist in quantum physics at Columbia University. She holds a Ph.D. in physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Worcester, Mass. She has published over 25 scientific research papers in internationally renowned magazines. Dr. Xie is well recognized as a dynamic leader who gets results, continuously learns and builds high- performing teams. In 2016, Dr. Xie received the California Diversity Council’s Most Powerful and Influential Woman Award for Northern California for her sustained record of professional accomplishments and community leadership. In 2017, she was featured in technology leadership magazine Sync for her work driving digital innovation in the healthcare ecosystem. A 2018 edition of American Healthcare Leader magazine also featured Dr. Xie’s successes in bringing enterprise architecture rigor to business growth and transformation. In 2019, she was featured in Becker’s Payer Issue for her leadership in executing the $20 billion payer’s technology strategy to drive the healthcare ecosystem transformation. |
